Warm-Up & Posture
Gentle body rolls, drifting hip circles and head-high posture work to loosen the spine and ease you into the slow, flirtatious tempo that burlesque thrives on.
Struts, Bumps & Grinds
The trademark moves introduced one at a time — a poised catwalk strut, a playful hip bump, the languid grind and a shoulder shimmy dripping with attitude.
Chair & Floor Work
Working a chair, coming back up with poise and dropping into grounded floor poses — the dramatic, sculpted lines that give a number its stage presence.
Boa & Glove Flair
Toying with a feather boa, easing off a long satin glove and teasing with a fan — getting the feel for a prop so it lands right on the beat with a wink.
Routine & Cool Down
Threading the pieces into a short cabaret number danced full-out with character, then an easy stretch to wind down the body and lock in everything you have gathered.
About Burlesque Dance Classes in Exeter
At heart, burlesque is cabaret mischief turned into movement — a blend of dancing, comedy and unapologetic showing-off. In our weekly Exeter sessions you build up its old-school toolkit piece by piece: a teasing walk, the held pose, rolling hips, a shoulder shimmy and the grind, layered with chair and floor work for that big theatrical payoff. A boa, a satin glove and a fan all get folded into the mix, and everything comes together as compact numbers you finish on a cheeky glance — and yes, fully dressed the whole way through.
Exeter enjoys its theatre nights and a lively crowd from the University of Exeter, yet a steady weekly burlesque class for adults has been surprisingly tricky to track down in the city. Ours are launching from our studio in Exeter city centre, a short walk from the Cathedral, the Quayside and Gandy Street, and welcoming dancers from across the city as well as Exmouth, Topsham, Crediton and Tiverton. The feel of the room is relaxed, a touch wicked and utterly without side-eye — somewhere a bit of sass is positively the point.
In this room any body counts as a stage body, whatever your age or experience, and people trying it for the first time settle in fast. Pop on heels for the tall showgirl silhouette or work the floor sections barefoot — no particular fitness or bendiness is asked of you up front. Have a look through all 20 of our dance classes in Exeter, or gather a few friends for a playful burlesque hen party.

What Burlesque Gives You
Confidence That Lasts
Learning to own a space through slow, measured movement pays off well beyond the studio. Dancers head home standing taller, walking with more nerve and feeling far more settled in their own skin.
The Glamour of Cabaret
Boas, gloves, fans and the humble chair all become part of your act. You will get to grips with handling them, holding a pose and timing a cheeky beat — the things that lend vintage burlesque its glitter and theatre.
A Persona of Your Own
Burlesque offers you an alter ego to slip into — a swagger, a look, a glance. Trying on that fearless version of yourself is freeing, and a genuine delight to perform.
Room for Every Body
There is no shape, size, age or fitness you need to hit first. Burlesque celebrates exactly the body you arrive with, and our studio stays warm, playful and entirely without judgement.
Your Burlesque Dance Journey
From your opening strut to a stage-ready cabaret act — here is the way it tends to unfold.
Discovering the Strut
Getting Started
A poised catwalk strut, drifting hip circles, the shoulder shimmy and a confident hold. The knack is moving with deliberate, teasing slowness instead of racing ahead.
What to Wear
Something close-fitting you can read your lines in, with a little glamour if it appeals. Wear heels for height or keep to bare feet — either is completely fine.
Layering on the Sass
Building Technique
Grinds, rolling hips, early chair moves and a few grounded poses begin stitching into snappy little runs full of swagger and well-judged comic timing.
Finding a Persona
You start to dream up a burlesque persona that is yours alone — a stage name, an attitude, a signature strut. It is the moment an inquisitive newcomer slips, almost unnoticed, into being a performer.
Bringing in the Props
Full Routines
Full cabaret pieces built around a feather boa, a satin glove peel and a fan. The skill here is owning the whole floor, drawing every eye your way and letting a silence hang exactly as long as it needs to.
The Art of the Tease
Comedy beats, the unhurried reveal, a held gaze and the right piece of music — the craft that turns a handful of moves into a proper turn.
Ready for the Spotlight
Showcase & Beyond
The chance to perform at a cabaret night or showcase, building a solo act of your own with original choreography, costume ideas and a track that is unmistakably yours.
What Comes Next
Step sideways into a heels class to sharpen things up, grab a few mates for a group slot, or simply keep polishing the act that suits you best.
Burlesque Dance FAQ
What newcomers most often like to check before their first time in the spotlight.
Do I need to have danced before to try burlesque? +
Not in the slightest. Burlesque prizes cheek and presence well ahead of polished technique, and newcomers fit right in. We pull every strut, shimmy and pose apart slowly, so someone arriving with no experience can piece together a short routine in one weekly session and walk out feeling like a proper performer.
Is there a dress code I should follow for class? +
Wear something close-fitting so you can track your shapes in the mirror, with a touch of vintage glamour if you fancy it. Some dancers love heels for that cabaret line while others keep to bare feet for the floor work, and both suit us fine. Bring a feather boa or a long glove if you own one, though there is a box of props here to share.
Is burlesque really about stripping off? +
Not at all — you stay completely dressed from start to finish. Burlesque is the cheeky craft of the tease, the slow peel of a glove, a wink behind a boa and a playful bump and grind, rather than actual stripping. What you take away is poise, stage presence and the nerve to hold a room, and that lingers long after the music has stopped.
What does a burlesque class in Exeter cost? +
One drop-in costs £10, with nothing to join and no forms to fill in. Fancy committing a little? Four weeks together come to £32, landing each session at £8. Nothing ties you in — no contract, no membership — so you can just show up whenever a week on the timetable works for you.
Where in Exeter are the burlesque classes held? +
Sessions are getting under way at our studio in Exeter city centre, an easy stroll from the Cathedral, the Quayside and Gandy Street. The room is private and screened, which fits the cheeky side of burlesque nicely, and with more sessions on the way we will point you to whichever one lands nearest to you.
Will I be made to dance in heels? +
Definitely not. A heel lends height and that long showgirl line, but loads of our dancers stick to bare feet or soft flats, especially through the floor sections. Begin in whatever keeps you steady, and if heels appeal later on we will grow your ankle strength and balance as we go.
I'm short on confidence — is burlesque still worth a go? +
It may well be the perfect place to start. A good few of our most assured dancers turned up convinced they could never command a room. Burlesque gives you a character to step inside and an unhurried, deliberate way of moving that lets self-consciousness slip away, so confidence tends to arrive sooner than you would imagine.
Which moves will I actually pick up in class? +
Look forward to struts and held poses, hip bumps and grinds, slow body rolls and the shimmy, plus chair and floor work brimming with attitude. Flair gets added with a feather boa, the peel of a long glove and a fan, and the whole lot is shaped into a short, glitzy number you finish on a knowing wink.
Who is burlesque for in terms of age and body shape? +
Genuinely anyone. The art form rests on the idea that no body is the wrong body for a stage, so our adult classes take in dancers from their late teens all the way to their seventies. Nothing about your shape, size or fitness needs sorting beforehand — turn up curious and a bit mischievous and you are good to go.
Could I set up a private burlesque lesson or a session for a group? +
Yes, gladly. We can organise private one-to-one coaching or a small group session by arrangement — ideal as a confidence lift, a birthday surprise or a concentrated push on one routine. Send us a message with what you and your group are picturing and we will build the session to match.
